This twist is an excellent example of spalting. Fungus and bacteria attacks moist dead wood and changes the texture and color in the process, often resulting in spectacular pieces for woodworking. The black lines frequently seen in spalted wood are lines of fungal growth. Spalted woods often present great problems for woodworkers in that they may be soft and unstable. Soaking them in liberal amounts of cyanoacrylate (Super Glue) helps.
